I can’t understand why someone would leave a car they cared about parked on the street long term. Besides this Merc, I’ve seen an S2000 and a vintage Alfa that were street parked suddenly appear with catastrophic damage and disappear permanently days later.

Someone hit my E34 while parked on the street about two months ago and it made me want to cry but luckily the damage wasn’t too bad

I don't know who would want to live somewhere they don't have adequate vehicle storage, or streets where people run into each other's cars on a regular basis.

Looks like a W220, I will refrain from any funny remarks.

Years I ago I lived in an area where maybe a mild hoarder parked some of his stuff on the street, and one of the cars, a late 60s big Pontiac, was hit (and ran) hard, demolished . The owner then put a big sign on it complaining about the “vandals” or something, I think the city eventually made him move it.

Storage in places where people actually want to live career-wise can be tough, and I suspect many don’t fathom the risks.

Insurance scam maybe?

That hadn’t occurred to me in this case. I’ve seen the car there for quite some time while walking the dogs, and the hit appears real - there’s a a gouge in the road and a skid mark under the wheel where it happened. I’d figure that older cars would be the kind of thing that would be underinsured too unless the driver had classic car insurance ... but then I wouldn’t expect that kind of owner to leave the car on the street.

I’ve heard stories of insurance scams but that mostly involves someone doing something dumb to a car they can’t afford, and then trying to portray the results as an insurance-covered event often by moving the car elsewhere.

That does make it sound unlikely.
